Blog Task 2 Part 1 - Lecture ReflectionMass communication has three paradigm approaches; they are are critical, functional and empirical. The most interesting point for us is influential cultural and ethical functions by mass communication into mass media. For example, when the cultural differences in mass media affects people and communication between them. Also, during the lecture our lecturer, Mr Philip, mentioned about macro-analysis in mass media showing us how to get along with the society. For instance, we can choose any country we wish to travel to. Firstly, we have to attain information from mass media about their culture before going travelling to that certain country. Nevertheless, when the show needs a perception from the audience about their program, we can know the reasons of them watching the show. This example is more towards micro-analysis in mass communication which helps us to consider which one is better. The media shows us more than we can verify, this also makes them more reliable. According to the meaning of credibility, we can find lots of mystical accidents around us. For example, mysteriously disappearance of MH370 and the tragic crash of MH17 (International Business Times, 2014).

The mass media does not supply only facts and data, it also provides information significant to events in
the society. So, in this lecture we learned new factors and functions of
approaching communication in media. All of this information gives us an understanding about communication between people and about society.
Part 2 - Media IdolFor the part 2 of our blog assignment, we are to think of an media idol we all look up to and answer a few questions. As a group we decided to pick Nick Vujicic as the idol.
A) Nick was born in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia. He
was not as fortunate as others as he was born without arms and legs. Three sonograms failed to reveal his complications. Nick’s family accepted the
facts of Nick might face various challenges in life but they are thankful to
God for blessing them with a son. The most difficult days in his life was his childhood; Nick was depressed and struggled with sadness and loneliness because he was a victim of bullying and almost gave up in life when
he was just a kid. According to Nick (Life
without Limbs, 2010), the victory over his struggles and all his
difficulties can be credited to his faith in God. His family and friends give
him a lot of courage to vanquish his difficulties. He is happy with his life
and he is blessed with a wife and a son.
In has stated in his book (Life without Limbs, 2010), that he has travelled around the world to
share his stories with millions, speaking to groups such as teenagers, students,
teachers, business professionals and etc. As a president of the international
non-profit ministry, Nick made an expedition from Australia all the way to
California just to share his experiences with people and gave more than moral
support. Furthermore, most people are obsessed with Nick Vujicic’s
positive attitude towards life because he had an unpleasant life during the early
days and they are astonished of how he overcomes his difficulties.

Like
every other person on earth, we face discrimination, bullying and rejection.
Nick Vujicic, born with tetra-amelia syndrome, is now a well-known motivational
speaker worldwide. His inspiring stories have definitely touched not only young
people but also adults who has thought of giving up on life.
Born
with no arms and limbs, Nick was bullied in school and he had many unwanted
attention from students. They looked at him weirdly, laughing and calling him names that was rude, Therefore, this lead Nick once to think of ending his life by drowning himself in a tub. He soon realized that it
wasn’t worth ending his life due to such criticism, but those critics made
him stronger. “Iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Holy Bible, 1973, Proverbs 27:17,
Biblica Inc, Colorado Springs).
Nick’s
optimism towards life has inspired young people to know and follow his advice by standing strong against bullying, they will eventually stop. If a small
man without arms and limbs can do it, everyone can do it. Youngsters also tend
to follow his footsteps by saving their virginity until marriage. Nick’s
independence by just a small little ‘chicken drumstick’ foot, which he calls
it, has taught many youngsters to be dependent as well.
C) As always, having the tendencies to follow media idols will have its positive and negative aspects affecting individuals. The positive aspect of follow the aforementioned will lead bullied and discriminated people to overcome their dilemmas, forget the past and move on happily with their lives. Everyone deserves to happy and they should be proud for gaining the courage to stand up for themselves. However, the negative aspect can come into play as well. How? Teenagers who follow nick's advice could be bullied and discriminated more for even trying to defend themselves. Individuals who bully and discriminate get enraged even more once they realize the victim could actually defend themselves, hence, the bullying intensifies resulting in a negative aspect. Whenever a step is taken to make a decision, the risk factor plays an immense role and to avoid negativity, the decision should be made with care.
D)
Hope, a four- letter
feathered word. It may seem unrealistic but if we believe in hope, miracles
will happen. Nick Vujicic teaches us to believe hope, even though it may wander
off at times, it will eventually come back to us when we need it most.
If we fear to accept
adversity, we plan to fail in life. Nick Vujicic teaches us to move on in life,
gain experiences from failures, motivate and encourage others, as sometimes we
may have changed a person’s life. Nick Vujicic even published a book entitled Life Without Limits, where he shares his
experiences in life and transmits positive messages to the readers.
E) The media has portrayed Nick
Vujicic as a resilient, tactful and optimistic person although he has to endure
unpleasant hardships. He always inspires people by using various methods and
encourages them not to give up easily as long as there is hope. Nick Vujicic
(The Star, 2013) once said, "The biggest
encourager and biggest discourager is you. Do not let others and circumstances
dictate your life", he was once a victim of bullying but all the
challenges that he had faced were never became his barrier to success in life.
Nick Vujicic is one of the best role models who stand up after every failure
because he believes that every failure is a small step to success.
