Blog Task 3 Part 1 - Lecture Reflection
Source: Mr. Philip's Lecture Slides
Authoritarianism
and libertarianism are two types of system that most countries apply to their
media system. Censorship that falls under authoritarianism’s characteristics
requires manuscript to be read by the government agent before being released to
public, which is also known as pre-publication censorship. The Chinese government practices authoritarianism has created the world’s largest
pre-publication censorship apparatus, Chinese Firewall, to monitor and control
incoming communications coming in to the country. Unfortunately, authoritarian
controls are hard to suppress for long-term effectiveness, which is also one of
the cause to the sign of loosening occasionally in China.
As for
libertarianism, it is free from any authority controls or any censorship. War
acts as a libertarian test from combat reporting. The rice-roots reporting in
Vietnam that had included many negative reporting has impacted the public’s
rejection towards war. In our opinion, the freedom of press should be
controlled to prevent any negative influences towards the society. In the other
hand, the controlling of press freedom should not be too restricted as further
information might not be able to reach out to public. Since the Internet is
highly accessible globally, information and censorship might be hard to be
controlled. Throughout the lecture, we have learnt that Japan, China and Arab
apply different media systems. In conclusion, different countries
practice different types of media system which influence each country’s
political and economics views.
